“I’m Elle, I’m a songwriter in Ottawa, and tonight I’m playing a show at Meow! That’s Hot, which is a local music venue in Centretown.

And what I love about Meow! That’s Hot is that they’re entirely focused around helping original songwriters hone their craft and find community in the city.

They host a weekly open-mic that is all for original music, no covers allowed.

Tonight is the night where you try the songs that you’re not sure about and you get comfortable with them.

I play around Ottawa a lot, and I’ve gotten to know a lot of people in the music community, whether they’re the people that come out to shows religiously or the musicians who are always trying to get better.

So tonight I’ll be playing some of my original songs.

They’re in varying stages of finish to today I hate it, yesterday I loved it, and I haven’t decided yet.

And what I’m doing is practicing playing the songs out so that I can see people’s reaction to them, I can see how I feel about them when I play in front of other people, and get everything ready so that I can record an album.

And because I’ve met so many great people playing around Centretown, like people from Spaceman Music, people from Meow! That’s Hot, people from all these venues up and down the street, there’s so many musicians here, I ended up finding a really great studio locally that I could record with.

So I’m really looking forward to that, and tonight is just all about getting some songs ready to do that.”

Centretown would like to acknowledge that Ottawa is built on the unceded, unsurrendered Territory of the Anishinaabe Algonquin Nation.

The Anishinaabe Algonquin peoples have lived on this land since time immemorial. We recognize and deeply appreciate their historic connection to this place. We also recognize the contributions of Métis, Inuit, and other Indigenous peoples have made, both in shaping and strengthening this community in particular, and our province and country as a whole.
