Creating People-First Spaces in Centretown

On June 13, the Centretown BIA will officially open Snider Park – a new urban green space in the heart of Centretown designed around art, culture, community, and everyday city life.

More than a park, the project represents a broader vision for what downtown public spaces can be: flexible, people-focused environments that support connection, creativity, and community well beyond the traditional workday.

As Ottawa’s downtown continues to evolve, projects like Snider Park play an important role in creating a more vibrant, livable, and welcoming urban core.

Why Spaces Like This Matter

Cities need places where people can simply exist.

Places to meet up with friends. Grab a coffee. Work outside for an hour. Listen to music. Attend a community event. Slow down for a moment between destinations.

These kinds of “third spaces” – spaces outside of home and work where people gather naturally – are essential to healthy, connected communities. They support mental well-being, encourage social connection, create safer and more active streets, and help downtown neighbourhoods feel alive beyond office hours.

In dense urban neighbourhoods like Centretown, accessible green space is especially important.

Snider Park responds directly to a growing citywide conversation around reclaiming underused urban spaces for people, culture, and community life. The project aligns with broader conversations around downtown revitalization, increased access to public green space, and the need for more human-scaled infrastructure in Ottawa’s urban core.

The goal was never just to build another plaza.

It was to create a space people genuinely want to spend time in.

Built for Everyday Life in Centretown

Snider Park was designed as a flexible public space that can evolve alongside the community around it.

The space includes:

  • Greenery and planters throughout the site

  • Public seating and gathering areas

  • Free public WiFi

  • Centre Stage, a built-in performance space for live music and community programming

  • Rotating public art and creative activations

  • A park café operated by AHH!!! Coffee, with The Booj and team bringing their signature coffee magic into the space

From quiet coffee breaks to cultural programming and community events, the park was created to support both everyday use and larger shared experiences.

At its core, Snider Park is about creating more room for community in Centretown.

Opening Day: June 13

To celebrate the launch of the space, the Centretown BIA will host an official public opening event on June 13.

The public park launch will take place at 4pm and is free and open to everyone.

Following the public opening, the adjacent parking lot will host the Grown Ass Pizza & Taco Fest from 5pm-11pm – a ticketed event featuring:

  • Live DJs

  • Dancing

  • Live street art

  • Food vendors

  • Community celebration throughout the evening
