“Hi, my name is Owen McGowan, I’m a stand-up comedian.

I’ve been doing comedy for about three and a half years now.

I do a lot of shows here in Centretown.

I find that stand-up comedy is a really good way to connect with the community.

People love to laugh and it does bring people together.

Also, stand-up comedy is having a bit of a resurgence right now.

People on TikTok and all that are seeking it out.

But I think people often forget that you can see stand-up locally and often for free.

Stand-up is also a really good way of reaching out to people and helping people understand different identities.

I’m a transgender man and I use stand-up as kind of a vehicle to help people understand where I’m coming from and my perspective.

I think it’s almost better a way of helping people understand each other because it’s non-threatening and it doesn’t feel preachy, I find, when people approach it through comedy instead of through a TED Talk or something.

I produce a monthly show that’s at Night Oat on Gladstone.

It’s the first Wednesday of every month.

You can come check it out if you’d like to.

Otherwise, you can find me @owen.mcgowan.comedy on Instagram.

You can DM me if you ever want to chat about standup or anything else.”

Centretown would like to acknowledge that Ottawa is built on the unceded, unsurrendered Territory of the Anishinaabe Algonquin Nation.

The Anishinaabe Algonquin peoples have lived on this land since time immemorial. We recognize and deeply appreciate their historic connection to this place. We also recognize the contributions of Métis, Inuit, and other Indigenous peoples have made, both in shaping and strengthening this community in particular, and our province and country as a whole.
