“My name is Kanaska Carter. I am a business owner and frontline worker at Shepherds of Good Hope. So I’ve been working here for two years now. I was actually homeless on and off for about ten years as a traveling musician in just circumstances that I went through personally myself.

I ended up creating a business, a metaphysical business, and I would donate a portion of my sales to actually I would make gift bags and give it to the homeless at Shepherds of Good Hope.

That was before I even got a job here.

And so I’ve had housing for just over five years now, and I remember always wanting to help the homeless in some way for the longest time.

Usually like when I was homeless, I think one day when I get out of this, I really want to give back and help people.

So I’m just hoping that this campaign just opens the eyes of other people to see that like this can happen to anybody, you know.

I’m sorry, I’m crying right now.

Anyway, I did that last time too.

This campaign is to bring awareness to homelessness.

And it is the stories of me and five other people that have come into contact either with homelessness or they know people who have experienced homelessness or they work here at Shepherds of Good Hope.

So it’s just to try to bring awareness to what’s going on.

This campaign gives the opportunity for people to stop and engage with people who are experiencing homelessness and perhaps realize that we’re not different.

We’re more alike than we might think.”

Centretown would like to acknowledge that Ottawa is built on the unceded, unsurrendered Territory of the Anishinaabe Algonquin Nation.

The Anishinaabe Algonquin peoples have lived on this land since time immemorial. We recognize and deeply appreciate their historic connection to this place. We also recognize the contributions of Métis, Inuit, and other Indigenous peoples have made, both in shaping and strengthening this community in particular, and our province and country as a whole.
