Neighbourhood institutions aren’t built overnight. They’re built one regular at a time.

For many Ottawans, nowhere reflects that more than The Royal Oak.

No matter where you are in Ottawa, there’s a good chance The Royal Oak is part of the neighbourhood – your local pub for lunch meetings, post-work cinq à septs, trivia nights, and sunny afternoons on the patio.

What began on Bank Street in 1980 has grown into one of Ottawa’s longest-running hospitality brands, with 12 locations across the city. And it all started right here in Centretown, when the first Royal Oak opened its doors at 318 Bank Street.

Today, with locations at both 318 Bank Street and 188 Bank Street, The Royal Oak continues to be part of the daily rhythm of Centretown.

The neighbourhood pub tradition

The best pubs are about more than food and drink.

At The Royal Oak, the experience is rooted in the tradition of the British pub: a place where conversation flows easily, meals are meant to be lingered over, and gathering is part of the culture.

The menu reflects that tradition. Fish & chips, housemade pub pies, shepherd’s pie, and bangers & mash sit alongside a wide selection of beers, cocktails, and other pub favourites.

But the experience extends beyond what’s on the plate.

It’s trivia nights that bring teams together week after week. It’s karaoke nights that turn strangers into regulars. It’s the familiar faces behind the bar and the conversations that linger long after the meal is over.

In the summer, it’s a seat on the patio with friends and a cold drink in hand.

The details may change, but the feeling stays the same.

Rooted in Ottawa

For more than four decades, The Royal Oak has been a central part of Ottawa’s hospitality landscape.

Today, the locally owned business operates 12 locations across the city, making it one of Ottawa’s longest-running pub brands. Yet despite that growth, the goal remains the same: create pubs that feel connected to the communities they serve.

Each location has its own character, shaped by its neighbourhood, but the experience remains familiar.

Wherever you are in Ottawa, chances are there’s a Royal Oak nearby.

And when you walk through the door, you know what you’re getting: friendly staff, quality food and drinks, and a traditional pub atmosphere that feels instantly familiar.

That consistency is part of what has allowed The Royal Oak to become a fixture in communities across the city.

A Centretown institution

Centretown has played a special role in The Royal Oak story from the very beginning.

Not only is the neighbourhood home to two Royal Oak locations today, it’s where the first chapter began more than 45 years ago.

Over the years, generations of residents, workers, students, and visitors have made the pub part of their routines.

Some stop in for a quick lunch. Others gather after work. Trivia teams claim their usual tables. Friends celebrate milestones. Neighbours become regulars.

Those moments may seem small on their own.

Together, they’re what turn a pub into a community fixture.

Built on Small Business

Built on Small Business is about more than longevity.

It’s about care. Craft. Responsibility. Long-term commitment.

It’s about businesses that understand they don’t exist in isolation – that they’re part of a neighbourhood ecosystem, shaped by and shaping the people around them.

Centretown runs on places like The Royal Oak.

Places that stay consistent. Stay familiar. And keep showing up.

And in Centretown, it’s built on having a place to belong.
