SUMMARY:CBC Massey Lectures 2026
DESCRIPTION:After all these years and all these recommendations\, why are we still in a housing crisis? Why haven’t we been able to build our way out of the problem? If we’ve collectively lost our way\, how do we find our way back home? \nIn the 2026 CBC Massey Lectures\, Housing Inc.: A Global Takeover and Our Fight for Home\, Leilani Farha reckons with a crisis engineered by governments and perfected by financial firms. \nIn her fifth and final lecture\, she argues we need more than a policy fix or a change in zoning law. We need to fundamentally reimagine home – and put people back at the centre. \nSince 1965\, CBC IDEAS has broadcast the Massey Lectures\, exploring the ideas that make us who we are. The lectures are a partnership between CBC\, House of Anansi Press and Massey College in the University of Toronto. For a complete list\, visit the CBC Massey Lecture archives. \nTicket options: \n\nTicket & Signed copy of Housing Inc.\n\nThis option includes a 20% discount on Leilani Farha’s book. Pick up at the theatre the night of the lecture.\n\n\nStudent and senior discounts available

SUMMARY:The Spontaneous Cello of South Africa's HA!Man
DESCRIPTION:Tickets: Early Bird $10 | GA $15 | Doors $20\n\nDescription\n\n\nEnter a world where spontaneous cello\, keys\, voice\, whistling\, recorder and nose flute – with or without original electronic accompaniments – overwhelm through a full range of emotive states and stylistic variety – especially the classical and African. A time and space specific live creation that journeys straight to the heart like few other performance experiences do. \nBio\nFrancois le Roux\, aka the HA!Man. is a 1966 Johannesburg-born son of a church minister and music teacher. His musical gift was recognized at age three when his first improvised piano pieces took shape. He studied cello and piano throughout his school years and appeared as a young soloist with orchestras\, and his improvisation skills were honed as an appointed church organist since age 10. During the dying years of Apartheid he went through a spiritual crisis that eventually took him on a career path of spontaneous music making\, also expanding into spontaneous dancing\, writing and visual art. At first only acoustic\, he went on to employ electronic recording for accompaniments during his ever evolving performances and the creation of soundtracks for numerous stage productions\, films and videos. His organizational skills landed him music directorships for celebratory events of national importance in South Africa as well as once in the Royal Albert Hall\, London. His broad interests turned him into a special artistic guest at major seminars. Two of his trademark choral songs\, Beautiful Land and Her Time Has Come\, featured at mass choir events and international competitions over the years. Yet he remains the personal networker who brings a world-class performance experience to houses and smaller venues globally. His workshops inspires young and old at schools\, universities and community organizations and as a full on improvisator\, he collaborated with many solo artists\, choirs\, ensembles and orchestras – always delivering the magic of full-bodied artistic works\, created within the flowing depth of the present moment. \nSocial:\nhttps://www.youtube.com/@franna3 \nTickets: Early Bird $10 | GA $15 | Doors $20 \nTickets on Sairyo \n  \nYour ticket guarantees you a seat in the house but not necessarily a seat with a direct line of sight to the performers. SUMMARY:Mali Obomsawin + Main Arteries
DESCRIPTION:Mali Obomsawin + Main Arteries\n\nOn October 29\, Abenaki multi-instrumentalist\, singer and composer Mali Obomsawin comes to FONO for an Ottawa release show celebrating her new album\, Automatic. Moving between experimental music and free jazz\, Automatic is the result of Obomsawin’s exploration of Abenaki language ethnological recordings made in the mid-1900s\, and her intention to reclaim the ancestral material from the outsiders who seized it. “Behind Automatic is a deep awareness about institutions’ predatory relationship with Native material\,” Obomsawin explains. “I wanted to make a record that institutions couldn’t own.” (via Various Small Flames) \nOpening the evening is Main Arteries\, a new project from prolific local drum improvisers Olivier Fairfield and Scott Warren combining acoustic percussion\, tape loops and synthetic textures. \nMali Obomsawin (Abenaki Nation\, Odanak) is a multi-instrumentalist\, singer and composer known for her solo work and her rock band Deerlady. She is based in New York City and Odanak\, Quebec. \nMali’s albums Sweet Tooth (2022) and Greatest Hits (released as ‘Deerlady’ in 2024) have garnered critical acclaim from Stereogum\, KEXP\, NPR\, and The Guardian. Her projects have brought her to Big Ears and Montreal Jazz Festivals\, and earned her a name across experimental\, free-jazz and rock scenes. Mali’s music has been featured in the Hulu FX series Reservation Dogs (2023) and is also part of an unsanctioned exhibition at the MET titled: “ENCODED: Change the Story\, Change the Future.” Encoded features 17 Native artists and won two 2025 Webby Awards. \nMali scored the film “Sugarcane” (2025) \, which was nominated for the Academy Awards’ Best Documentary Feature. Her work was nominated for Best Original Score by the International Documentary Association and Cinema Eye Honors. \nCombining acoustic percussion\, tape loops\, and synthetic textures\, Main Arteries (Olivier Fairfield & Scott Warren) shapes soundscapes driven by the fractured legacy of the mid-20th-century Gréber Plan —a failed utopian vision for the design of Canada’s Capital Region by French urban planner Jacques Gréber. \n———————————– \nPresented by Debaser \nThursday\, October 29\, 2026 \n8:00 PM / 19+ \n$20 adv/$25 door

SUMMARY:Friday Night Folk Ft. Jennifer Noxon & Christine Graves
DESCRIPTION:Tickets: CAD $15 in advance\, $20 at the door Sairyo \nFriday Night Folk is a bi-monthly concert series at Art House Cafe. On the first Friday of every other month Art House Cafe will feature two folk acts\, hosted by local singer-songwriter Matt Gower. \nThis edition FNF showcases folk acts Jennifer Noxon and Christine Graves. Sponsored by CKCU fm. \nBios\n \n\nJennifer Noxon\njennifernoxon.com \nBoth a songwriter and a visual artist\, Jennifer has a painter’s eye for detail and a poetic knack for telling stories that transports us into extraordinary moments in the lives of everyday people. Her rich\, resonant voice and love of rhythm and melody make it easy for the listener to be swept from celebratory to profound moments\, touring the emotional nooks and crannies along the way. \n\n\nChristine Graves\nchristinegraves.com\nReturning to touring and performing with the release Everyday Life\, Graves has built on her reputation as a fine contemporary Canadian songwriter from years of successful art making. From 2006 to 2008 Graves was artistic director at Blue Skies Music Festival\, worked in health care\, & started a family. She stayed away from solo recording until her suddenly estranged life during the pandemic brought songwriting to the forefront once more.  Songs flooded. Graves took to the studio in later 2022 with Dave Draves. \nHer career has included shared stages with Lesley Feist\, Buffy Sainte Marie (intentially not removed despite what has come to light) and Fairport Convention among so many others. She has played festival\, house concerts and theatre music series across Canada. Her five years as alto in Malaika brought her to the US and the recording studio twice. Graves now makes her home in Ottawa ON. \nMatt Gower\nhttps://mattgower.net \nMatt Gower is a folk singer-songwriter from Ottawa\, Ontario. Matt’s music blends elements of alt-country\, old-time Appalachian tunes\, bluegrass\, and roots-rock to underscore his dynamically powerful yet vulnerable vocals. Matt’s musical influences include Wilco\, Jerry Garcia\, Gillian Welch and The Milk Carton Kids. Throughout Matt’s journeys\, a constant thread has held true: nothing carries more weight than connecting with an audience through the power of song. \nSocial Media \n@mattgowerottawa \nTickets: CAD $15 in advance\, $20 at the door Sairyo \nYour ticket guarantees you a seat in the house but not necessarily a seat with a direct line of sight to the performers. We recommend coming early to snag a spot or if you need accommodations\, like a guaranteed seat for accessibility reasons\, to please email us at ac.efacesuohtraehtobfsctd-96888d@stneve at least 72 hours before the event. \nLimited quantity of tickets available. If the event has not sold out online\, there will be tickets available at the counter. \nTicket refunds or date transfers are not available. \nIMPORTANT ACCESSIBILITY INFO \nWe provide gender-neutral washrooms.
