“Hi my name is Pooja Pawaskar. I’m an artist and a sculptor based in Ottawa. My work talks about traditional Japanese aesthetic wabi-sabi (わび・さび), body positivity and embracing your sexuality.

I’m South Asian by heritage. Growing up in Mumbai, India, I really struggled with embracing myself, my authentic self. And I would always try to be a wallflower growing up. And since becoming an artist, I’ve come to embrace myself and celebrate myself. And that’s something that I really aspire that people take away from my work.

I want people to not just see my work and love it, but also learn from it, learn to almost use it as a metaphor to embrace their own authentic selves.

In 2023, I did a film documentary with Francois Mittins, and we did a screening for it at Studio 20/20 in Centretown.

I feel like that documentary and just watching people watch and see themselves in that documentary really meant a lot for me, because that’s something that I truly wish I can do in the long run from my work.”

Centretown would like to acknowledge that Ottawa is built on the unceded, unsurrendered Territory of the Anishinaabe Algonquin Nation.

The Anishinaabe Algonquin peoples have lived on this land since time immemorial. We recognize and deeply appreciate their historic connection to this place. We also recognize the contributions of Métis, Inuit, and other Indigenous peoples have made, both in shaping and strengthening this community in particular, and our province and country as a whole.
