“My name is Norman Igloopialik. I’m from Arviat, Nunavut. I moved to the city over 25 years ago.

I’ve been doing art for the past 30 odd years and my artwork is known worldwide and I was an illustrationist for Inuktitut Magazine. I completed two children’s books and I was one of the artists selected to go to the Vancouver Olympics.

Today, I’m in self-marketing on the side. I go to Bank Street and Gladstone two or three times a week for a kind of community environment. People talk to me, I’ll talk to them and I share my side of the story with the art. My style is very simple with pencils.

The reason I bring my art to that spot is because I used to drink. I’m a recovering alcoholic. I’ve been sober 18 months but at the time, I used to drink there but now I go there with my art and the people from there used to know me as a drunk but today they see me as an artist.”

Centretown would like to acknowledge that Ottawa is built on the unceded, unsurrendered Territory of the Anishinaabe Algonquin Nation.

The Anishinaabe Algonquin peoples have lived on this land since time immemorial. We recognize and deeply appreciate their historic connection to this place. We also recognize the contributions of Métis, Inuit, and other Indigenous peoples have made, both in shaping and strengthening this community in particular, and our province and country as a whole.
