Meet Samantha and Jamil, the Awesome Duo Behind Lainey’s Luck!

Lainey’s Luck: A Thrifter’s Paradise in Centretown

Lainey’s Luck is the brainchild of Samantha and her partner Jamil. They opened the store in late August 2023, located at 523 Bank St. Samantha spent over 25 years in the restaurant industry, while Jamil worked in nonprofits and renewable energy. They both reached a point in their lives where they needed a change, wanting to do something they were passionate about and that could make a difference.

Like many, the pandemic gave Samantha and Jamil time to rethink their paths. Samantha had moved from Toronto to the Madawaska Valley just before the pandemic, eventually meeting Jamil, who lived in Ottawa. After moving to the city and taking a restaurant job, Samantha’s love for thrifting and vintage clothing inspired a side business on Etsy. With Jamil’s uncle running a clothing recycling depot in Toronto, the idea to start Lainey’s Luck took shape.

Building Lainey’s Luck

Finding the right location was a challenge, but they eventually found the perfect spot at 523 Bank St. Initially starting with bins of clothing sold by the pound, they soon added racks for heavier and more delicate items. Their business evolved, offering something for everyone, from vintage treasures to everyday essentials. They introduced individual pricing and racks for those who prefer a more straightforward shopping experience. Samantha’s favorite is “Lainey’s Picks,” a rack of handpicked pieces that deserve a spotlight.

A Bright Future Ahead

After almost nine months, Samantha and Jamil feel they’ve found their groove. The sight of happy customers breathing new life into preloved clothing reassures them that they’re on the right track. And Lainey, their beloved cat who inspired the store’s name, is a constant reminder of their journey. She came from a farmstead in the valley and became part of their family, adding a personal touch to the store’s story.

Centretown would like to acknowledge that Ottawa is built on the unceded, unsurrendered Territory of the Anishinaabe Algonquin Nation.

The Anishinaabe Algonquin peoples have lived on this land since time immemorial. We recognize and deeply appreciate their historic connection to this place. We also recognize the contributions of Métis, Inuit, and other Indigenous peoples have made, both in shaping and strengthening this community in particular, and our province and country as a whole.
