The Story of Highjinx: A Vintage Shop and Community House

Tell us the story behind your business

After years of working in Social Services, we grew frustrated with the challenges of meeting people’s needs within a broken system. Driven to find a better way, we (Karen & Lee) started Highjinx—a unique blend of a little antique and vintage shop with a big purpose. We knew our Neighbours needed more than just practical items like furniture, sleeping bags, or food; they needed support, companionship, and dignity. Highjinx became a hub of helping, where we resell donated items and use the proceeds to assist our Vulnerable Neighbours. We don’t receive government funding—we rely solely on the generosity of our incredible Community!

What are the distinctive qualities or unique offerings that set your business apart?

We are lucky to have awesome items donated daily and that means the shop is never the same two days in a row. There is a huge variety of kitschy vintage pieces, local art, quirky decor, antiques, oddities and some really unique treasures.

What drives your passion for this business and keeps you dedicated to serving the Centretown community?

Being that we are residents of Centretown ourselves, we are very invested in our Community and Neighbours. The need for support for those that are unhoused is increasing and their needs are becoming more and more complex. As long as there are residents of Ottawa being marginalized, hungry, homeless, in crisis, needing assistance and compassion we will work to serve them to the best of our abilities.  Running the shop, meeting folks and actively involved in our Community keeps us motivated. Every day is different and full of fun at highjinx!
